Lay it Down

It takes everything

out of her

to remove her mask

worn down

by years of facade

but the pieces

clutch at the skin

stubborn

unrelenting

she claws at her face

howling

as her fingers

reveal live skin

red and plump

and the dead

trapped under her nails

though her skin sizzles

as sunlight hits her

exposed

and her eyes sting

painful to blink

to see

she stands

as to bleed

is to be alive.
